I’m doing what I guess could be called market research. I need help decided what if anything I should start making to add to my etsy shop.

I’m closing the brick & mortar store in April and moving everything online. I’m in the process of uploading everything to a stand alone store that will be linked to this blog and this domain name. I’ve been pretty successful on etsy this past six months as a supply seller so I will probably keep that going for the time being.

I also have a second etsy shop where I used to try to sell my photography. But that never took off and it was too time consuming to promote and keep up to date for very little pay off. I am thinking of turning that shop into a shop for my handmade items. I’ve tried in the past to sell my handbags and a few other things at etsy and had moderate success.

I have a lot of fabric that isn’t really popular and needs to move one way or the other and I was thinking of using it to make stuff to sell. I thought if I focused on one or two things I could streamline production and promote easier. I just need to decide what those things will be. I’ve found that the etsy handbag market is really saturated and competitive so I think I’m not going to go back into that arena again.

I am debating between: aprons, pajama/lounge pants and skirts. What do you all think? The other possibility would be to market to knitters and make sock bags, accessory zip bags, and larger totes.

One of my best etsy customers is threeyellowstarfish. Margaret is in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and makes the cutest baby outfits. I remember making similar bloomers and pinafores for my girls when they were little. So versatile and CUTE! I love how they are all reversible too so you get a lot of bang for your buck. Imagine if you will the ability to reverse the outfit mid-day after an unfortunate strained pea incident. She also mentions that she will be listing reversible overalls soon for little boys. Can’t wait to see those too.

This adorable pinafore was made with Sandy Gervais’ Pumpkins Gone Wild line from Moda.

(Isn’t that model too adorable for words too?)

You can also go to her blog to enter to win a free bloomer and pinafore set!

There just so happens to be a little person of the female type on my shopping list this year. If her Mommy (you know who you are, MYLENE!) happens to read this go to Margaret’s shop and let me know which one you like best!

Since I first started thinking about this business I’ve wanted to put together my own kits. But I had no idea (still don’t really!) where to begin. But I just went ahead anyway. Based on some suggestions from friends I started with one of my free patterns and one project that was suggested to me.

I put together kits of my eco-tote shopping bag a while ago. I’ve had them here in the store and I have sold a few. But I finally got my act together and photographed them and listed them in my etsy store.

A couple weeks ago one of my online friends sent me a link to a rag quilt with the suggestion that these would make great holiday projects. Of course I ran right out to the front room, grabbed some bolts and started cutting and sewing!

This is my first one made with squares of all the different holiday flannels I have. It is so soft and cuddly! But then I looked at all the coordinating smooth cottons I have and had to make another.

This one is made with the Jennifer Paganelli “Bell Bottoms” line. I added batting to this one too but I don’t like it so I won’t suggest that to anyone else. Maybe a layer of plain flannel sandwiched between the regular cotton would be nice. Flannel would add a little body and warmth without making it stiff like the Thermolam did on this one.
Today I added my first kit for these to my etsy shop: Rag Quilt Kit
Tomorrow I hope to have time to put together a kit out of the Bell Bottom fabric and get that listed too. Of course if you are local and would like a kit you can always stop in the store and pick out your own fabric combination.

Happy Sewing!

I’ve been a tad bit AWOL for the past month or so it seems. I wake up every morning with a To-do list and by about noon I’m usually so far off list I’ve forgotten that I even had a list.

I think the Mess Family is finally adjusted back to the school routine. But every year has different challenges and adjustments. This year has been a big one for us because we’re now a Middle School and High School family. Earlier start times, E now riding a bus, S getting out much earlier and still having after school activities that get out mid-afternoon, etc. Not only have I gone from being a stay at home mom a year ago to a full-time working Mom, but we have joined that legion of families that is not home until almost 9p.m. every evening. It has been a struggle to juggle everyone’s schedules. The other challenge I’m trying to figure out are those mid-afternoon activities of my girls. The high school S attends isn’t within walking distance of either the store or home or any of our friends’ homes. When she does after school clubs she gets done around 3:30. Students aren’t allowed to “loiter” at the school once their activities are over so she can’t wait in the library or elsewhere to do homework until I close at 5:00 and can come get her. Once she was able to score a ride with a friend who happened to stay after for another activity but mostly I’ve been closing for 20 minutes while I run up there and pick her up. This isn’t the perfect solution but it’ll have to do until I find a better one. I apologize upfront if anyone comes to the store around 3:30 and finds a post-it note on the door saying I’ll be back in a few minutes. I promise if you’ll be patient, I’ll be right back.

The other thing that has had me busy in a very good way is my etsy shop. I finally got organized and started listing some of my fabrics there. It has been a great success! Every morning I come into the store a little earlier as to have time to get fabric cut, packaged and postage printed so I can get it in the mail. Kind of cool to be able to say I have customers in the UK, Norway and Australia as well as Montana, Utah, Georgia and Colorado. It has also started to pick up the slack of the slow days around here.

In my struggle to keep all the balls in the air I’ve unfortunately let some things slip through my fingers. Like my Dad’s birthday. It was a month ago tomorrow. (I also didn’t call or send a card for Father’s Day so I’m really on the sh*t list!) I don’t have a good excuse so I won’t make one.

Instead I’ll just say, “Happy Birthday from your little pumpkin!”
I love you dad.
